URBAN AG & DEVELOPMENT
Economic inequality and inequalities in access to healthy food are key drivers of poor diet and ill health among young people. A clear indicator stems from the fact that in 2024 the majority rural and urban low-income neighborhoods still have significantly less access to fresh produce than other residents, according to researchers at Emory University’s Rollins School of Public Health. Higher grocery prices due to food deserts and inflation are examples of how historical, social, economic and environmental factors continue to hold many communities back, creating more barriers to food security.
